Your Horse's Life: Tips for Road Safety
Two
Horses a day are involved in serious road accidents
every year.
Those accidents could have been prevented if there
were more consideration between Equestrians and
Motorists.
Most
Motorists have no understanding of how easily a horse
can be startled and do something impulsive like
jumping in front of a car.
Riders
can protect their horse from road accidents by being
alert to situations that might spook the horse and
avoiding them, especially if a car is about to pass.
Situations that cause sudden and unexpected noise or
motion, such as litter rustling on the ground, would
be an example of when to proceed with caution.
Riders
can help Motorists see them by wearing reflective
clothing and riding in good light conditions.
This gives the motorist a chance to slow down in
anticipation of passing the horse.
Last,
but not least, remember to signal a thank you to
motorists who show consideration by passing slowly and
giving your horse a wide berth.
